The new h.265 video codec is a clever piece of work. It allows for roughly the same quality video as h.264 for around half the file size. You could also get the same file-size with double the quality, or the same quality with the half file-size. The standard seems like it needs to be fully cooked, but it's very interesting stuff.
The link below is a super interesting video to explain more about how it works. As of the time of this post, VLC will play it, but you need a decent computer as it is software rendered. Also the conversion app HandBreak can encode it. As of the moment, I wouldn't use h.265 as your only copy of a video file, but the progress made so far is promising.
